Another event I attended during Philly Beer Week was a beer and chocolate pairing at Iron Hill West Chester. Head brewer Larry Horwitz was on hand to pour his wonderful Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout along side some fantastic chocolates from Éclat Chocolate.
This past Saturday was the 3rd annual SAVOR: An American craft beer and food experience!
SAVOR is one of my favorite days of the year. I’ve been to every one since its inception in 2008, and was ecstatic to be able to represent RateBeer this time around!

This phenomenal event, featuring Philadelphia’s premier local food and craft beer, was a fundraiser for Fair Food, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing locally grown food into the Philadelphia marketplace.

Last month, I wrote up an introduction to the basics of beer and food pairing, detailing four simple rules to get pairing newbies started. Methinks it’s time to dig a little deeper.
Before the age of craft beer, back when only macros were readily available, the only widely accepted beer and food pairing was the old standy-by: pizza and beer. And this wasn’t so much a “pairing” as it was a declaration of, “I am man! I eat pizza! I drink beer!” followed by some animalistic grunting.
